We recently caught up with Benjamin Dryer, a hypnotherapist from Assisi Therapy. We learnt more about his therapist experience including his journey into hypnotherapy, his perspectives of hypnotherapy and what you can expect as one of his patients.
1. Can you tell me about your journey into complementary health and why you chose hypnotherapy?
I had a fairly spectacular introduction into the power of Hypnosis when my wife gave birth to our son. She had been to a local Hypnotherapist who specialised in Hypno-Birthing and woke up a few days before the due date to visit the toilet, but realised that she was in fact giving birth! No panic, no pain and nothing more than what you might call relaxed surprise. That being said, I don’t think I was that relaxed after I had delivered our first born 10 minutes after waking up!
2. How would you explain the benefits of hypnotherapy to someone unfamiliar with it?
I offer a blend of Hypnosis, Psychotherapy and Counselling. This allows us to work on a range of levels in a way specifically tailored to the client and very much with them at the centre of things. My training does not make me an expert in the client, but it does allow us to work out where they have come from and how they get to where they are going.
3. What do you wish more people knew about hypnotherapy? What is the biggest misconception?
There are two things that clients would do well to unknow. The Therapist is so often seen as an all knowing sage, who is there to fix a client without them having to be part of the process. The second thing I see fairly regularly, is that working with the subconscious is somehow a bit “whooo”. Hypnotherapy or indeed any of the long standing Psychotherapeutic approaches is based on the idea that your mind is largely inaccessible to you and that such a huge library of personal experiences, forgotten memories and learnings, is something everyone can draw on to their benefit.
4. What advice do you have for individuals interested in exploring complementary health options for their own wellness?
If you have come this far then you have already started on the journey towards change. Find a practitioner that you like the sound of and take the next step before anything gets in your way. Modern life will always throw something at you, but don’t let that get in the way of helping yourself out.
5. How do you approach appointments with your patients?
My clients will have a quick, free and informal telephone call with me where we can work out if we are a good fit. All being well, a first session can be booked within a couple of weeks and I usually see clients every 10-14 days, depending on what suits them. This helps with the cost of coming to therapy, but it also give clients time to recognise changes that occur between sessions.
